Anza-Borrego Roads and Places


Borrego-Salton Seaway (S-22),
Clark Valley, Santa Rosa Mountains

In the Anza-Borrego desert region, the paved roads are these:

Interstate 8 – East-west route across the southern desert. San Diego to Yuma, passing through Jacumba, Ocotillo, El Centro, and Winterhaven. More.

State Highway 78 – East-west route across the central desert. From Highway 79 in Julian to Yaqui Pass Road in ABDSP, then across Mescal Bajada, Lower Borrego Valley, and Imperial County points including the Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge and Algodones Dunes.

State Highway 86 – North-south route along the west side of the Salton Sea. Calexico to Indio.

State Highway 98 – East-west route across the southern desert. Ocotillo to Calexico.

State Highway 111 – North-south route along the east side of the Salton Sea. Calexico to Palm Springs.

State Highway 371 – Access to Anza and northern entrances to the State Park. Aguanga (State Highway 79) to State Highway 74.

County Road S-1 (Sunrise Highway, Buckman Springs Road) – From the mountains above the central desert to the south. Sunrise Highway from State Highway 79 to Interstate 8. Buckman Springs Road from Interstate-8 to Campo.

County Road S-2 – North-south road up on the west side of the Anza-Borrego desert. Known locally as the San Felipe Valley Road from Highway 79 in the mountains, four miles south of Warner Springs, to the desert at Scissors Crossing, as the Southern Emigrant Trail from Scissors Crossing to Canebrake, as the Sweeney Pass Road from Canebrake to the county line, and as the Imperial Highway from the county line to Highway 98 south of Ocotillo. Access to Anza-Borrego from Orange and Los Angeles counties. More.

County Road S-3 – North-south route across the Borrego Valley. Known locally as the Borrego Springs Road in Borrego Springs and the Yaqui Pass Road from Borrego Springs to State Highway 78.

County Road S-22 – West-east route across the northern desert. Known locally as the Montezuma Valley Road from County Road S-2 in the mountains to Borrego Springs, as Palm Canyon Drive in Borrego Springs, as Pegleg Road east of Borrego Springs, and as the Borrego-Salton Seaway east of the Pegleg Monument.
